Lucian Bute vs Denis Grachev
Venue: Bell Centre , Montreal, QC
Date: Sat, Nov 3 at P.M (ET)
Light heavyweight division | 12 rounds
The NABF Light Heavyweight Title is on the line as Lucian Bute and Dennis Grachev tangle in this intriguing matchup. Both fighters are heading into the fight going in opposite direction as Bute suffered his first professional loss at the hands of Carl Froch whereas Grachev upset top prospect Ismayl Sillakh. Grachev is heading to Bute’s adopted home as 25/31 fights have taken place in Canada and the crowd figures to play a factor in the bout.
Dennis Grachev has a very interesting background as he has been competing professionally in both kickboxing and boxing for the past several years. With only 13 professional fights, the list of past opponents Grachev has faced is not rather impressive except for his last one. As mentioned above, Grachev upset up and coming Ismayl Sillakh with an 8th round TKO this past April when the two fought. Sillakh was widely regarded as a top 10 light heavyweight and was being lined up for bigger and better fights in the future, until Grachev pulled the massive upset that will be in consideration for upset of the year.
Lucian Bute is stepping back into the ring for the first time since getting annihilated at the hands of Carl Froch. The two fighters agreed to do a 2 part fight with the first one being Froch’s home country and then the return fight in Bute’s. Up until the Froch fight, one could argue that Bute’s best win was against a faded Glen Johnson and that he truly hadn’t been test. Well Bute definitely got all that he could handle and more when Froch handed him a true beat down. Froch was the runner-up in the Super Six competition that saw Andre Ward emerge into a star and Bute was the overwhelming betting favorite heading into the fight. Froch proved that fighting the best super middleweights in the division was more useful than padding you’re recorded against B level competition. Froch was able to take the fight to Bute early and it was clear that Bute did not feel comfortable with the crowd against him and really struggled with Froch’s pressure. In the 5th round Froch closed the show and won by a technical knockout. Bute has the rematch option in his contract and was also able to take an interim fight and so we get Lucian Bute vs Dennis Grachev.
